What is LCD FPC?

LCD FPC is a flexible circuit board widely used in electronic devices related to liquid crystal displays. Its main function is to realize the electrical connection between the LCD and the motherboard or driving circuit. The motherboard plays a critical role in processing and managing signals, ensuring seamless communication with the LCD. LCD FPC is thin, flexible, and high-density, making it ideal for compact and complex designs.

Features of LCD FPC

  • Line rules: The wires on the flex PCB boards are very fine and dense, usually neatly arranged copper foil lines, and there may be a design with multiple layers of lines superimposed.

  • Contact end design: The side connected to the LCD screen is usually a contact (exposed pad), and there may be a gold finger (gold-plated contact) for inserting the connector. The most common is the ZIF interface (zero insertion force), which is used with the connector, and the contact end usually has an alignment mark line.

  • Solder point: The other side may be directly soldered to the motherboard, and the pad is larger.

  • Some LCD FPCs will add stiffeners (usually FR4 materials) at the interface or key positions to improve mechanical strength and stability.

  • Marking or model: Many FPC boards will print product models, production batch numbers, or brand logos. The font is usually small and located in the non-line part.

  • Symmetry: Most flex PCBs are designed according to the device layout and may have irregular shapes, but they always match the device housing or interface position.

Main application scenarios of LCD FPC

Flex PCB is a bridge connecting display screens and is very common in our life. For example, it is used in smartwatches, LCD TVs, touch screens, monitors, instruments, navigation screens and game consoles.

Smartphones and tablets:

Connect the display screen and the motherboard to realize the transmission of display signals, touch signals, and backlight control signals. Support high-resolution and high-refresh rate display, and adapt to different types of screens such as AMOLED and LTPS LCD.

Factory automation system:

Used for industrial control touch screens to interact with PLC and other devices.

VR/AR devices:

Connect micro high-resolution displays and signal processing units to support ultra-low latency image transmission.

Advantages of FPC in LCD

  • High-density wiring: to meet the high data volume transmission of 2K, 4K or even 8K resolution, high-resolution LCD requires finer line width and line spacing, such as 10/10μm or less.

  • Thin and light: adapt to the limited space inside the device, usually less than 0.1mm thick.

  • Flexible design: adapt to different space layouts and device shapes.

  • Durability: Strong resistance to bending and vibration, suitable for dynamic devices. Able to withstand mechanical stress from bending or accidental falling of the device


As display technology (such as 8K, Micro-LED) and electronic devices develop towards thinness and high performance, LCD FPC is moving towards higher density, higher reliability and multi-functional integration, and the L/S of flex PCB will be further reduced (≤5/5μm).
