What is FPC cable?

FPC cable means flexible PCB cable, it is made of multi-layer polyimide or other high-temperature heat-resistant materials as the substrate, and a conductive circuit pattern is formed on the surface by etching or printing. This cable is a flexible connector with circuit functions, usually with pinholes or pins at both ends of the cable. Complex circuits can be integrated into thin and flexible substrates. FPC cable has flexibility such as folding, bending, and twisting, and is widely used in electronic products that require bending connections, such as folding mobile phones, tablets, etc.

What is FFC?

FFC, flat flexible cable

FFC is the abbreviation for Flat Flexible Cable. It is composed of fiber material and a covering layer, and has the characteristics of flatness, softness, and lightness. It is mainly used to simplify traditional wire harnesses. It is generally composed of copper wires or tinned copper conductors, arranged in plastic insulating films to form parallel wires, arranged regularly, usually without complex circuit patterns, and is mainly used for point-to-point connections. It can arbitrarily select the number and spacing of wires, making wiring more convenient, greatly reducing the size of electronic products, reducing production costs, and improving production efficiency. It is most suitable for data transmission cables between mobile parts and motherboards, between PCB boards, and in miniaturized electrical equipment. Common specifications include 0.5 mm, 0.8 mm, 1.0 mm, 1.25 mm, 1.27 mm, 1.5 mm, 2.0 mm, 2.54 mm, and other flexible cables with various spacings.

Features of FFC:

Simplicity: Simple structure, suitable for point-to-point signal transmission.

Economical: Compared with FPC, the production process is simpler, and the cost is relatively low.

Moderate flexibility: Although it does not have the three-dimensional flexibility of FPC, it can still bend and is suitable for flat or slightly curved structures.

Application: Commonly used in electronic devices such as printers, monitors, optical drives, and TVs for short-distance signal transmission or power connections.


What is the difference between FPC cable and FFC?

FPC cables and FFC are two common flexible cables that differ in structure, manufacturing process, and application. The following are their main differences:

Structure and materials

FPC cables are usually made of polyimide or polyester substrate, a conductor layer (copper foil), and adhesive, and the covering layer is an insulating film. They have a multi-layer structure and complex circuit design to meet the connection requirements of different circuit boards. The conductive circuit is formed by processes such as etching, which can carry more functions and is suitable for complex electronic connections.

FFC is usually made of PET insulating material and extremely thin tinned flat copper wires pressed together by automated equipment. FFC is relatively simple in structure. FFC is just an arrangement of multiple parallel wires, and the number and spacing of wires can be arbitrarily selected. It is mainly used for point-to-point connections.

Manufacturing process

FPC cables involve complex processes such as etching, electroplating, lamination, and drilling. Complex circuit patterns can be designed according to specific needs, and flexible circuit boards with single-sided, double-sided, or multi-layer structures can be made, which are suitable for complex circuits and multi-layer designs.

FFC is to cut thin and flat conductor wires (such as copper wires) according to the required width and thickness, and then arrange the cut conductor wires at a certain spacing, and then cover the arranged wires with insulating materials through an extrusion process. Finally, the upper and lower layers of insulating materials are laminated on both sides of the arranged wires, and the materials are firmly combined using heat pressing and high pressure. The process is relatively simple, and the production efficiency is high.

Application scenarios:

FPC cables are suitable for complex and sophisticated electronic devices with high flexibility and integration capabilities.

FFC is a more economical solution for simple, straight-line connection applications, such as short-distance signal transmission.

Flexibility and adaptability:

FPC has very good flexibility and can adapt to various curved and twisted circuit board shapes, and components can be arranged.

FFC also has the advantages of softness, arbitrary bending and folding, simple connection, and easy disassembly, but components cannot be arranged.

FPC: Mainly used for the connection of LCD display screens to driver circuit boards, as well as portable electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, etc., to provide stable electrical connections for the normal operation of the equipment.

FFC: Widely used for signal transmission and connection of various printers, plotters, scanners, copiers, audio devices, and other products.

In terms of application scenarios, FPC will be more flexible.

Performance and Application

Due to different production processes, FPC can customize the connection mode of any shape. FPC cable has higher flexibility and bendability, which is suitable for dynamic applications.

FFC can only be made into regular shapes. Although it is also flexible, its flexibility and durability are not as good as FPC cable, which is suitable for static applications.

Connection and Installation

FPC cable can usually be directly soldered to the circuit board of electronic products or connected through connectors, and the welding requirements are high.

FFC is normally connected to electronic equipment through plug-in connectors (such as ZIF and LIF connectors), which are easy to install.

Cost

FPC cable has a high manufacturing cost due to its complex manufacturing process and high degree of customization.

FFC has a simple manufacturing process, low material costs, and low manufacturing costs.

  • Electrical performance: Including indicators such as conductivity, insulation, and impedance. The specific parameters will be evaluated according to product requirements and design requirements.

  • Operating temperature range: The operating temperature range of FFC and FPC is usually between -40℃ and +85℃, but there are also some special requirements that can achieve a wider temperature range.

  • Reliability: FFC and FPC usually need to test parameters such as pressure, bending times, and tensile strength in terms of reliability to ensure that they do not break or disconnect during use.
