Empowering PDLC Innovation: Flex Plus's Advanced Flex PCB for Smart Glass, Flex PCB for PDLC

Updated: Aug 31, 2023

PDLC Product Overview

PDLC smart dimming film, also referred to as PDLC polymer dispersed liquid crystal, is a product that leverages membrane technology. It involves combining rod-shaped polymer liquid crystal (LC) with prepolymer, which is then attached to a transparent conductive substrate. This unique combination imparts the characteristics of both liquid crystal and polymer, resulting in distinct electro-optical properties. The film's molecules, when randomly arranged, render an opaque state in the absence of an electric field. However, the application of an electric field aligns these molecules, leading to transparency. The transition between these transparent and opaque states is facilitated through controlled adjustments to the electric field.

Product Principle

The STF structure integrates a mixture of liquid crystal and polymer, effectively sandwiched between two conductive films. The polymer forms a networked structure, while the gaps are filled with liquid crystal droplets and polymer materials comprising liquid crystal components. Within each droplet, the liquid crystal molecules align uniformly, establishing a uniaxial liquid crystal configuration, although the alignment of optical axes among various droplets remains disordered.

The conductive film, known as a Flex PCB (FPCB), is a thin layer featuring an ITO conductive layer or a transparent conductive layer fabricated from silver nanowires. This layer imparts conductivity. As light traverses the conductive film, it traverses through substances like networked polymer, liquid crystal droplets, networked polymer, and additional liquid crystal droplets in the propagation direction. In the absence of an electric field, the disordered alignment of optical axes within the liquid crystal droplets scatters light at the interface between the droplets and the networked polymer, resulting in an opaque state.

Under the influence of an electric field, the optical axes within the liquid crystal droplets align orderly. This enables light to pass through the interface between the liquid crystal droplets and the networked polymer, thereby displaying a transparent state.

Product Features

  1. Privacy Protection: The most remarkable feature of the smart dimming film is its privacy protection capability, allowing real-time control over the glass's transparency and opacity.

  2. Projection Capability: The smart dimming film excels not only in dimming control but also serves as an exceptional projection screen, delivering outstanding projection effects.

  3. Energy Efficiency and Environmental Conservation: Upon electrification, power consumption is a mere 5W per square meter per hour. The film can effectively block 60% of infrared rays and 99% of ultraviolet rays. It mitigates infrared rays, reducing heat radiation and conduction. Ultraviolet shielding safeguards interior furnishings from fading and aging due to UV exposure, while protecting individuals from direct UV-related health risks.

  4. Sound Insulation Characteristics: By adhering to glass, the smart dimming film functions as a noise reducer, efficiently isolating diverse noises.

  5. Safety: It incorporates all safety glass benefits, encompassing post-breakage safety, excellent impact resistance, sound insulation, heat insulation, and UV protection.
